Twenty Seven - Dayton

Harmony’s trailer is too fucking small. I try to relax on her couch, but it’s more like a loveseat. Feeling cramped, I stand in the living room and survey the small open area. The kitchen fits Harmony and the kid fine, and they move around easily. I meanwhile smack my elbow on the fridge and then my knee against the dark blue island-style cart.

“The food will be here soon,” Harmony says while running her fingers down my back. “I hope you like it.”

“If I don’t, I’ll order pizza. I remember you saying you like leftovers.”

“Leftovers!” Keanu yells, jumping around the living room with his LEGO man in one hand and a small plastic airplane in the other.

“Are you okay?” Harmony asks when I can't find a place to stand.

“Your trailer is tiny.”

“I know, but it’s only Keanu and me.”

“Do you like it being so small?”

“If I had the money, I’d get something bigger.”

“How come Daisy’s place never seemed so small? Or Ruby’s?”

“Daisy has cats, so her place isn’t filled with toys. Same with Ruby since Elle is past her little kid toy phase.”

“Kids need space, I guess.”

“I’m sorry if you’re not comfortable here,” she says, wrapping her arms around my waist.

“Are you really?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure because you sounded sarcastic when you said it?”

“Look, I want you to be comfortable, but I won’t apologize for living modestly on the salary I get from a job I love.”

“What about the money the kid’s grandparents send?”

“I told you how I save half each month for emergencies or stuff he’ll need when he gets older. Like braces or college. I want to be smart with money.”

“I want you to have nice things,” I say, scratching the back of my neck. “I’m fairly sure my way is right.”

“Fairly sure or not, you’re still wrong. Now settle down, find a place to sit, and pretend to like the food even if you don’t. Korean food isn’t my favorite, and it’s not Keanu’s either, but I want him to know his heritage. Besides, you were the one who suggested ordering from the place.”

“I did suggest it. You know why?”

“Why?”

“I’m a considerate guy.”

“Yes, you are,” she says, indulging me with a sweet smile.

“Now that we’ve established my cred, we need to do something about how fucking hot it is in this trailer.”

“I’ll turn on more fans.”

“Or we can pack up the kid and the delivery food and head to my air-conditioned condo.”

“Dayton, as much as I like that idea, I have to work tomorrow. Also, your condo has nowhere for Keanu to sleep. I know you don’t like it here, but your place isn’t set up for kids.”

Her words give me an idea, but first I need to find a place to sit comfortably. Keanu jumps around the living room, making explosion noises from his plane shooting targets throughout the trailer.

“Are you at war?” I ask him while Harmony turns on a fan and points it at me.

Keanu does his double-shoulder shrug and returns to shooting invisible enemies.
